Weekend Planner: Fire Open House and Chili Cook-off, Cider and Doughnuts Sale and More

If the tastes of fall don't suit your fancy, check out Even Exchange at O'Mara's Restaurant, browse an indoor garage sale at American Legion Post 374 or shop for books at the Huntington Woods Public Library.

There are plenty of options this weekend for indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. Check out these ideas, leave a comment to add your own and then head out to have some fun.

Even Exchange at O'Mara's

When: 9:30 p.m-12:30 a.m. Friday

Cost: $3 cover charge

Cider and doughnut sale

When: 8 a.m.-noon Saturday

Where: The corners of Scotia and Lincoln and York and Lincoln and at the .

Why go: The 36th annual Huntington Woods Men's Club and Women's League cider and doughnut sale will benefit a number of Metro Detroit causes, including Gleaners, HAVEN and scholarships.

Cost: Prices are $5 for a gallon of cider, $3.50 for a half-gallon of cider, $3.50 for a half-dozen doughnuts (cinnamon/sugar or plain), according to an event press release.

What else: The cider for sale will be pasteurized.

Fire Open House and Chili Cook-off

When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday

Where:

Why go: Adults and children can learn fire safety tips during the Berkley Public Safety Department's annual Fire Open House, during which a citywide chili cook-off also will be held. The open house will feature live burn and Jaws of Life demonstrations, a Smoke House and more. Representatives of the Law Enforcement Education Program will be on hand to provide free child ID kits. 

Cost: The open house is free; the chili cook-off costs $10 to enter.

What else: The Berkley Public Safety Department funds the Fire Open House via fundraisers throughout the year. Contact the Public Safety Department on Facebook to RSVP or if you'd like to volunteer to help during the open house. Call 248-854-2422 for more information about the chili cook-off. The public will determine the winner.

Indoor Garage Sale

When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday

Where:

Why go: Stay warm and dry while you hunt for treasures or shop for bargains.

Cost: Sale prices vary; reserve a table for $20.

What else: Call Barb Rice at 248-224-9492 to reserve a table. The public is welcome.

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

When: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

Where:

Why go: Grab your reusable shopping bags and load up during the library's biggest sale of the year, featuring lots of new items. Shoppers will be able to take home fiction and nonfiction titles, children's and adult books, as well as CDs, DVDs, videos and audio books.

Cost: Hardcovers will be available for $1, and paperbacks will sell for 25 cents each.

What else: Proceeds benefit the library.
