Weekend Planner: Festivals, Fundraisers and More

Berkley Winterfest, Off to the Races and a home organization workshop are just a few ways to spend Saturday and Sunday – read on for more ideas!

Hold onto your hats, there's a lot to pencil in this weekend!

For starters, the kicks off Friday. The city will be aglow in blue as it hosts more than 60 concerts and events in at least 24 venues over nine days. The festival includes events in Hazel Park and Royal Oak Township, and new music options such as rock 'n' roll, club, dance, big band, house and electronic music. Berkley Winterfest

  • When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Why go: The second annual Winterfest event will feature games, ice skating, a chili cook-off, a petting farm, a snowman-building contest and more.
  • Cost: Admission is free; tasting and voting in chili cook-off costs $5.

  • When: 11 a.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: Sue Elder from Good 2 Be Organized and Claire Galed of the  will teach participants how to organize their electronics and technology equipment. Information and resources on local recycling and waste reduction opportunities also will be provided.
  • What else: Registration is requested.

  • When: 7 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Silver Garden of Southfield
  • Cost: $30 for admission
  • Why go: The third annual event to benefit the  will feature dinner, a cash bar, a silent auction and simulated horse racing. Besides attending, participants can get involved by sponsoring one of the 12 races for $250, buying a horse that will run at the event for $25 or donating auction items or prizes.

  • When: 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday
  • Where:
  • Cost: $35
  • Why go: Check out 25 beer samples, which are included in the ticket price. 
  • What else: Identification required at entry. Buy tickets here.

  • When: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Cost: $20 for adults and $10 for students
  • Why go: This 90-minute musical revue is the third annual fundraiser for the Welcome Inn, a day shelter for the homeless people in the Royal Oak area. This event generates 10 percent of the annual income needed to keep the shelter open from mid-December to mid-March.
  • What else: Chief meteorologist Jim Madaus of WWJ-TV will emcee the event.
