Weekend Planner: Comics, Toy Stores and Shows

And, don't forget: The Huntington Woods Women's League invites you to the annual Adopt-a-Garden Fall Clean-up on Saturday at the Recreation Center.

There's plenty going on this weekend in Berkley, Huntington Woods and beyond, including a few inspiring shows, Neighborhood Toy Store Day and a chance to chime in with an NPR host.


  • Where: Detroit Comics
  • When: 7 p.m. Friday
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: NPR's Brooke Gladstone recently created a graphic novel called The Influencing Machine. Illustrated by Josh Neufeld, Gladstone's The Influencing Machine is a comic book about the media that asks if objectivity is possible. Weigh in on what you think during the live Skype.

Adopt-A-Garden Fall Clean-Up

  • Where: Gardens on the south side of the
  • When: 10-11 a.m. Saturday
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: The Huntington Woods Women's League is inviting residents to participate in the annual fall garden clean-up.

  • When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: The Doll Hospital is celebrating Neighborhood Toy Store Day with community-minded activities, such as giveaways, goodie bags, balloons, popcorn, an arts-and-crafts table and plenty of toy representatives.


  • Where:
  • When: 2:30 p.m. Saturday (doors open at 2 p.m.).
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: Ryan Hurley and his best friend, Eric Gelb, are co-creators of the musical about four teenagers entering middle school. The students say the show tackles difficult subjects such as popularity, peer pressure, betrayal and staying true to yourself.

  • When: 6:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Cost: $10
  • Why go: The Movement, narrated by Robert Redford and Warren Miller, tells the story of five individuals from all walks of life who faced incredible obstacles, found the inspiration to overcome them and became everyday heroes. Through skiing, each has ultimately discovered or rediscovered the freedom of movement.
