Week in Review: Catch Up on the News You Missed

It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Preparations for the 17th annual Woodward Dream Cruise are getting into full swing and, with only a couple of months before the big event Aug. 20, during its meeting Monday at . This year's gear features a Camaro and uses collegiate-style lettering. Sales will begin at 2 p.m., several hours earlier than usual, on Aug. 12 at the corner of 12 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue. The merchandise sales are a big income generator for several community groups.
  • For a moment Tuesday morning in the lobby of in Berkley, defendant Sarah Gaynor stood alone, on crutches, next to the somber loved ones of Terrence Dyer, who was  at the age of 42. take place at 9 a.m. Sept. 6, or sooner if results of a mental competency and criminal responsibility forensic examination of Gaynor come back more quickly than anticipated.
  • On Wednesday, we reported that against pending state cuts to K-12 education and changes to tenure and collective bargaining for teachers. A Board of Education budget hearing was held several hours after the protest. Larry Gallagher, superintendent of finance, facilities and operations, said the reduction of full-time employees next year may be 18.98. That means some of the teachers on the layoff list of 45 soon could be called back.
  • On Thursday, we launched . The stories offer parents tips on how to host parties and how to keep lines of communication open, as well as a list of community resources. Today, we'll share teens' point of view on making responsible choices.
  • On Friday in Get Out, we offered a guide to weekend fun in Berkley. Several beloved annual events –  including Lids for Kids, Berkley Art Bash and Relay For Life of Oak Park-Berkley – will keep the community hopping this weekend.
