Taste of Berkley to Kick Off Berkley Days

The food festival Thursday will promote local businesses and benefit Berkley-Huntington Woods Youth Assistance.

The annual Berkley Days celebration will kick off Thursday with a new event: the Taste of Berkley food and wine festival.

Taste of Berkley, from 6-9 p.m. at the , will feature offerings from Hogger's BBQ, , , , , , , , , , , , and more. in Berkley will serve adult beverages.

"The main purpose is to promote the establishments in Berkley," organizer Alan Kideckel said. "They get exposure at a great time with weddings, birthdays and graduations (coming up)."

The 21-and-older event benefits Berkley-Huntington Woods Youth Assistance, in the make good decisions and offers a camp program, mentoring and family education.

"Hopefully, we'll have lots of people," said Elwin Greenwald, owner of Elwin & Co. in Berkley, which will provide cookies and brownies during the food festival. "We hope we have a good turnout because we're crazy about Berkley."

Taste of Berkley is modeled on a similar event that is popular in Ferndale. Greenwald said such festivals are a fun way to discover businesses that may have been under your nose all along.

"You get a flavor of the community (at taste fests) – they're nice," he said. "You get a nice overview of restaurants. You get to know about places you wouldn't have even known exist."
