Summer Fun: Camps for Every Kid

Berkley and Huntington Woods both have openings in a variety of programs.

We have one word for you: Camp.

The good news is that both the Berkley and Huntington Woods Parks & Recreation departments have openings available in their summer programs.

Some of Berkley's specialty programs such as basketball and baseball camps begin June 20. And, recreation program coordinator Scott Jennex said many returning counselors are planning activities and weekly field trips.

“Counselors are truly what makes a camp a great camp,” said Berkley resident Shannon McMahon, who has enrolled her kids in Berkley summer camps for 9 years. McMahon said she likes that many of the counselors are college students. “They are role models to young kids,” she said.

Over in Huntington Woods, recreation program coordinator Tracy Shanley said there is still some availability in the city's Fruit Camps for kids in preschool through fifth grade. Each day camp is named after a fruit – Honeydew, Watermelon, etc. – and is designed with a specific age group in mind. Campers will get to do arts and crafts, athletic activities and more.

There also is availability within the specialty camps, with themes such as sports or music, that run throughout the summer. Check out the quarterly newsletter for complete camp descriptions.
