Strong Winds Result in Power Outages for 800+ Berkley Customers, Angell Elementary

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Oakland County and more than 800 DTE customers, including Angell Elementary School, lost power.

A wind advisory for Oakland County is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, and residents are cautioned about southwest winds gusting up to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service issued the hazardous weather warning at 11:45 a.m. for numerous Metro Detroit counties, with more than 52,000 DTE customers without power at some point today.

According to the DTE outage map, more than 800 customers in Berkley were without power this afternoon. Affected homes were in a cluster south of 12 Mile and east of Greenfield.

, at Beverly Boulevard and Bacon Avenue, lost power around 12:25 p.m., according to a message the Berkley school district sent to Angell families this afternoon. The school day proceeded and power was restored just after 2 p.m.

Huntington Woods was not as affected as Berkley and surrounding areas, such as Ferndale, Royal Oak and Clawson. City Manager Alex Allie said he hoped the strong winds do not cause a power outage in the community, as it may hault the start of construction on Coolidge tomorrow.

"It's brutal out there," he said. "It definitely could have an impact on construction."

Weather in this area is expected to remain strong until the early evening as a cold front moves in. In the meantime, the National Weather Service warned of downed tree limbs, power outages and loose objects, such as trash cans, blowing around. 

Residents are urged to secure objects around the home and exercise caution when driving in strong winds.
