Reading Nook: Women's History Month

This week's book picks celebrate the contributions of women in the United States.

March is Women's History Month in the United States, an opportunity to spotlight women's contributions and struggles during our past and present.

In recognition, staff at the have selected several titles for adults and children that focus on women and their accomplishments.

Adult books

The Norton Book of Women's Lives edited by Phyllis Rose, 1993: This anthology includes excerpts from 20th-century memoirs, journals and autobiographies about women from different countries, careers and cultures.

Founding Mothers by Cokie Roberts, 2004: A journalist's look at the women who influenced the Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War and as the Constitution was written; includes photos and recipes.

Children's books

You Forgot Your Skirt Amelia Bloomer! by Shana Corey, 2000: Learn about a woman who started her own newspaper, sought voting rights for women and changed the way women dressed by wearing pants (also called bloomers or pantaloons).

A Whole New Ballgame by Sue Macy, 1993: The story of women's professional baseball is told from its start during World War II to its inclusion at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
