As many residents used the holiday to kick back and relax, those who came out to attend the ceremonies viewed the holiday as a more somber occasion.

"It is necessary to remind people what the tiny minority does for the vast majority," said George Gallino, who serves as chaplain at the VFW Post 9222. "That is what Memorial Day is about."
