Never Fear: Huntington Woods Fireworks Are Near

The Men's Club is selling raffle tickets to help make up for funds the city couldn't contribute this year due to budget constraints.

Contrary to a report over the weekend in another publication, Huntington Woods' fireworks and Fourth of July celebrations will go on as scheduled this year.

City Commissioner Jules Olsman, who also is a member of the Huntington Woods Men's Club, e-mailed Berkley Patch on Monday to let residents know any report stating the fireworks have been canceled is "categorically false."

"The 4th of July is Huntington Woods’ signature holiday. The parade is now 40 years old. People who long moved elsewhere come back to the city for the parade and the fireworks," Olsman wrote. "The City will continue to support this holiday celebration in all aspects and activities."

The fireworks, which cost approximately $13,500 to put on, have been funded in the past largely by the residents' association and Men's Club, with the city covering the balance. However, this year, the city could not make its usual contribution due to budget constraints. So, the Men's Club has been working to fill the gap via ongoing raffle ticket sales and a $5,000 donation.

The Men’s Club has changed its usual Tax Raffle held every year on the Fourth of July. Raffle winners used to have a portion of their city property taxes paid for. This year, the raffle will be called the Fireworks Raffle and all proceeds will go toward funding the fireworks display. The raffle has brought in about $6,000 in past years, City Commissioner and Men's Club member Robert Paul has said.
