Moms Talk: When Do You Say Yes To a Pet?

So your kids are begging for a puppy or kitten, but you're worried about the expense and responsibility of a new family member. How do you decide what to do and which animal to choose?

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked whether you agree with the Casey Anthony verdict.

The 25-year-old Florida mother was found not guilty on a first-degree murder charge that could have led to the death penalty.

The body of Anthony's 2-year-old daughter Caylee was found in 2008 near the family's home. Anthony, who did not report that her daughter was missing for more than a month and lied during an ensuing investigation, was found guilty on four counts of lying to investigators.

She is scheduled to be released from custody Sunday.

  • Nate Ross: "I think the whole situation is unfortunate. Clearly the whole family is extremely dysfunctional. It's sad that a child should pay for the family's problems, but all of the jurors including the alternates said the state simply didn't prove its case. Being judged by our peers is what our country was founded on, not trial by media. The truth is that none of us know everything that was presented in the court room, so we should trust the decision of our fellow citizens."
  • Libby Turpin: "I truly feel that Casey Anthony will live the rest of her life with the punishment she deserves. Whatever happened in Caylee's death will forever live inside Casey's heart and mind. All of her secretive actions and feelings will live within her, which leaves her no room for redemption."

This week, we have a lighter conversation topic for you: How do you decide whether or not to bring a pet into your home? What kind of rules do you give your kids? How do you choose what kind of pet will work best for your family?
