Moms Talk: Should You Be Friends With Your Children?

Post a comment to share your thoughts on whether parents should try to engage their children on a friendly level.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you whether children should be allowed to watch TV and what limits should be placed on their viewing. Here's what you had to say:

  • "Some programs can help teach about other cultures, reading, writing, manners, etc., and can be a supplement to learning in 'real' life. I don't want to raise a couple of couch potatoes, but an hour or two of good programming can provide some down time for the kids, family time together or a distraction for the little ones so I can start dinner!" – Alissa Malerman
  • " (celebrated) 'screen-free challenge' (last) week for March is Reading Month celebration. My kids complained about doing it, but guess what ... I have not heard an 'I'm bored' or 'Can I watch iCarly?' They are creating games, coloring, doing word puzzles, dancing ... . The screen-free challenge has made me realize how our TV has become a background conversation in our house. I am going to start turning it off unless we are watching a show together." – Libby Turpin

This week, we'd like to hear your thoughts on whether parents should be friends with their children or whether they should maintain their roles as authority figures.
