Moms Talk: Should High-Schoolers Go on Spring Break Trips?

Post a comment about whether you think teenagers are mature enough to travel and what rules they should have.

(Dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you how should react to proposed state budget cuts that would impose a $470 per-pupil reduction in K-12 schools. Here's what you had to say:

  • "Cutting athletics and music has major negative consequences for the development of many, many students. Plus, cutting these programs will make Berkley less marketable to schools of choice families or even potential community members. Like Superintendent Michael Simeck said, it is hard to say where or what to cut; it isn't a decision made lightly. However, teachers have been laid off for the past few years. I would like to see some of the upper-level administration be cut. Berkley is top-heavy. The state has been begging school districts to consolidate services for years. How about outsourcing human resources, like lunch aid staff are outsourced? I imagine a couple of teachers' jobs could possibly be saved. My kids love the custodial staff at ; but if I have a choice between smaller class sizes and outsourced custodial services, I would choose to outsource custodians. What are the building capacities? Do we have too many buildings, where one could be closed and consolidated before the elimination of athletics and music?" – Libby Turpin

This week, we'd like to hear your thoughts on whether high-schoolers should be allowed to go on spring break vacations in April. If so, what kind of destinations are off-limits? What kinds of rules should be involved?
