Moms Talk: Should Children Be Allowed to Watch TV?

Post a comment to share your thoughts on how much television is too much and what limits young viewers should have.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you when children should start preschool. Here's what you had to say:

  • "As an educator and a parent, I believe starting preschool early is important. Children learn early on how to interact with each other socially and begin to understand school structure. Most children enter preschool between 3 and 4 years old, but those who have been in a day care setting (even if only one to two days a week) often fare better. ... Of course, there is nothing wrong with keeping your child home longer, but I would make sure they are involved in a good amount of activities outside of the home. As far as children who have fall birthdays, I think you need to look at each child individually. Statistically, boys mature slower than girls and often do better starting school later." – Dana Kaplan
  • "Little kids need structure, social interaction and boundaries. But I think they also need down time, free time and time with their families. The important thing is to provide all of these things, how ever you can. I think at least two years of preschool is best to prepare a child for school. Anything more depends on the child." – Alissa Malerman
  • "Three years old is a great age for most kids. They start to learn that there are other wonderful adults in the world who can also teach and nurture them, but Mom and Dad always come back. They start to make friends (my kids' best friends are kids they met in preschool), they learn to listen to directions and behave in a group. They also gain some independence – putting on their own coat, carrying their school bag, etc. I loved my kids' preschool. It prepared them, and me, for those early school years." – Molly Zink

This week, we'd like to hear your thoughts on whether children should be allowed to watch TV and, if so, how much is too much? What limits should be placed on their television consumption?
