Moms Talk: How Should Schools React to Proposed Cuts?

Post a comment to share your thoughts about how the Berkley School District should handle proposed state budget cuts.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you ? Here's what you had to say:

  • "Kids should learn early, early, early. And they should learn it from their parents (though sadly, most are too embarrassed or uncomfortable to broach the subject) well before they're provided with inaccurate information from classmates. School should be a supplement to early and ongoing discussion at home – never the sole source." – Conny Coon
  • "I would say fourth grade is a good time for schools to step in. At this point, the kids will have noticed the physical changes in their classmates and their own bodies and may need an avenue to ask questions and get information outside of the home. ... I agree with Conny that schools should not be the sole source of information. But children may be more open to talk to a nonparent about their changing bodies." – Alissa Malerman
  • "I agree with both Conny and Alissa. Yet, one question is still left hanging: What should they learn? The survey Berkley Schools sent out had a wide range of topics from homosexuality to rape. Is a fourth-grader too young to learn what rape is? Who should they learn it from? I think it is vital for parents to review the sexual education curriculum with the schools, so they are prepared to cover and enhance the information the school system delivers at home." – Libby Turpin

This week, as the considers how to react to proposed state budget cuts that would impose a $470 per-pupil reduction in K-12 schools, tell us how you think the district could make cuts.
