Moms Talk: How Do You Teach the Significance of Memorial Day?

Post a comment to share your thoughts about how to explain the holiday's meaning to children.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you how to teach kids about money. Here's what you had to say:

  • Libby Turpin: "I feel it is important for kids to perform chores for the sheer responsibility of being a part of the family. Yet, I do give my kids extra jobs to make some money. They also help an (elderly) neighbor perform household chores. Like most kids, they want new toys with every stop at Target. I make them save their money in order to get new toys. They need to make the choice whether that Lego set is worth their own savings."
  • Alissa Malerman: "I like to take my kids on little errands, such as going to the market to pick up a carton of milk, pet food, a book of stamps, etc. We make a list, talk about how much it costs and I let them hand the money to the cashier. I think it's an important lesson to teach kids that you should plan out purchases. I like to use actual money so they can see the money exchanging hands let them help count it if the cashier seems patient!"

This week, we'd like to hear how you explain the significance of Memorial Day to children.
