Moms Talk: How Do You Talk with Children about Proposed K-12 Funding Cuts, Teacher Layoffs?

Post a comment to share your thoughts about how to help young students understand what the plans mean for them.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked you how to talk to children about the death of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. Here's what you had to say:

  • Alissa Malerman: I'm thankful that my kids are little. I can still get away with "we caught the bad guy." I cringe when I think that one day, I will have to explain to them who Osama bin Laden was and what happened on 9/11. I suppose when the time comes, I will handle it the same way I usually handle telling them about horrible things that happen – I will focus on the heroes. And on that day, there were more heroes than villains.
  • Libby Turpin: Alissa, I love your suggestion to focus on the heroes. I am a parent who believes in honesty, so I would surely let them know who he was, what he did, and why his death was considered a success. Yet, to focus that story with the heroes is an awesome way to make it a happy ending.

This week, we'd like to hear how you're helping your children deal with talk of K-12 education funding cuts and possible teacher layoffs. What kinds of concerns are they raising?
