Moms Talk: Are You Happy About Apple Slices in McDonald's Meals?

The fast-food chain plans to add fruit to all Happy Meals in the fall and reduce the serving size of fries in the kids' boxes.

Last week in Moms Talk (dads, you're welcome to chime in, too!), we asked how you keep your kids safe online.

Here's what you had to say:

  • Alissa Malerman: "With two kids, 5 and 7, we have a computer in a family area that has a few kid-friendly sites bookmarked. They are supervised when they are online and so far it has been a very educational and fun family experience."
  • Libby Turpin: "You have to be vigilant with monitoring their use. Luckily, the history settings would show us if there was any clicks to sites we did not approve. Yes, it is too easy for kids, knowingly or mistakenly, to find those sites. From there, we did have to have talks about those sites and the dangers they could cause. ... Furthermore, I wish we would have monitored the number of applications open at one time or forbid more than the needed applications. Kids today have Facebook, Google, Twitter, iTunes, etc all open while they are supposedly completing a paper or doing research. No wonder so many kids say they suffer from ADD; they have constant gratification for every whim at their fingertips. How can they focus?"

On Tuesday, fast-food giant McDonald's announced that beginning in the fall, it will add apple slices and reduce the portion of French fries in its children's meal boxes. Do you think the change is a step in the right direction? Do you hold fast-food chains responsible for childhood obesity in the United States? What other changes would you like to see? Or, do you disagree with the change?
