Library Corner: Snag a Macy's Discount Card, Used Books for a Quarter

Stop by the Berkley Public Library to pick up a Shop For A Cause pass or register to win a $500 gift certificate, and visit the Huntington Woods Public Library for deeply discounted texts.

The Berkley and Huntington Woods public libraries both have great bargains to offer this week that will benefit their respective booster groups and, in turn, the facilities and communities that use them – that means you.

Shop For A Cause

Would you like to save money on your children's back-to-school gear and give the Friends of the Library at boost at the same time? Then you're in luck! The group will participate Saturday in Macy's Shop For A Cause program.

Stop by the library this week to buy a $5 pass that will entitle you to a 25 percent discount Saturday at Macy's (with a few restrictions). Pass-holders may also enter to win a $500 Macy’s gift card. All of the pass proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Library.

"This is an excellent way to finish up your back-to-school shopping and help the local community at the same time," library Director Celia Morse wrote in an email to Berkley Patch.

Bargains on books

The used book sale at the , which began Wednesday, will continue from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday.

The Friends of the Library is holding the special midweek event thanks to an unusually large amount of book donations. Proceeds will be used to support library programs and activities.

Prices will start at a mere 25 cents.

The offerings will include:

  • Adult hardcovers and paperbacks
  • Children's and young adult titles
  • Vintage books
  • Selections on dolls, dollhouses and miniatures
  • Foreign-language materials and dictionaries
  • DVDs, CDs, audio books, VHS tapes, sheet music and vinyl records

There will be "something for every interest – arts, biographies and memoirs, business, cooking, health, history, literature and fiction, mysteries and thrillers, nonfiction, politics, religion, science, science fiction, self-help (and) travel," according to a library press release.
