Huntington Woods Issues West Nile Virus Alert

Residents are urged to educate themselves about how the disease is spread – the LaSalle Boulevard fountain is not a mosquito breeding ground, for example – and take protective measures such as wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants.

The city of Huntington Woods has issued a West Nile Virus alert following reports that the disease has been reported in Oakland County.

The number of human cases of West Nile Virus in Oakland County had increased to nine as of Aug. 22, according to the Oakland County Health Division. There were , the Michigan Department of Community Health Communicable Disease Division said earlier this month.

The city's alert urges citizens to take a level-headed approach, stating, "West Nile Virus is cause for concern, not panic," and offering the following advice.

  • Continue to protect yourself and your children by wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants when heading out into mosquito-infested areas and use proper repellents.
  • The city has treated all catch basins with larvicide, which is a start. You must now be diligent. Look for places where water lies stagnant. A puddle in the street that cars drive through is not a breeding ground for mosquitoes nor is the . Water must remain undisturbed for at least 7 days for mosquitoes to breed.
  • Check for items that may be lying under bushes or decks. Empty pool covers and children's wading pools regularly. A pail turned upside down can still collect water.
