UPDATED: Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Heat Advisory in Effect

We're not yet used to the heat, so high temps can be hazardous, the National Weather Service warns.

The weather in southeast Michigan just can't seem to find a happy medium – one week it's chilly and soggy and the next it's sizzling and stormy.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. for southeast Michigan and is warning residents to be careful. It also has issued a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until midnight for the area.

"Thunderstorms are likely this evening," the NWS said. "There is a slight chance that the storms will be severe with the main threat being damaging winds in excess of 70 (miles per hour). Large hail greater than 1 inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes are also possible."

Temperatures also were expected to rise into the lower 90s during the afternoon and the "real feel" was expected to climb into the upper 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible, the NWS says. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, of course (). And it's a good idea to check on relatives and neighbors who might be negatively affected.
