UPDATED: Water Shut Off During Work to Replace Main

Huntington Woods residents on a stretch of Nadine will have water service restored tonight, but it may be off again Thursday, the Department of Public Works says.

Crews worked Wednesday to replace part of a water main on Nadine in Huntington Woods, which resulted in water being shut off to a number of nearby homes.

The city is working on a multi-year project to upgrade roads and infrastructure throughout the community, which means several streets – including Nadine – have turned into construction sites this summer.

On Wednesday, crews worked to tie a new water line into the system, manager Clare Galed said.

"The new water line has been weighed and tested, which means they've shocked it with chlorine to eliminate bacteria to make it safe for water to run through it," she said.

Earlier Wednesday, in a kid's summertime dream come true, water gushed from the hydrant at Nadine and Newport.

The Public Works Department opened the hydrant to relieve pressure on the water main at Nadine and Meadowcrest so that the pipe could be cut and replaced, project manager Larry Harworth said.

He said he expects water going to residents' homes will be turned off throughout the day. It will be restored this evening, but may be off again Thursday.

"The exact timing of the work will, as always, be dependent on weather and other conditions being favorable," read a DPW notice left in residents' doors before the work began. "When your water comes back on, as when we do hydrant flushing, run your cold water tap at the lowest point in your house, e.g. at your laundry tub, to clear your system of any residue."

The project is going to be "a total reconstruct," including asphalt, driveway approaches, curbs, water mains and storm lines, Harworth told Berkley Patch in March. The impacted roads include:

  • Sherwood Drive (Berkley Avenue to Henley Avenue)
  • Berkley Avenue (Wales Avenue to Winchester Avenue)
  • Victoria Avenue (Coolidge Highway to Berkley Avenue)
  • Nadine Avenue (Meadowcrest Boulevard to Huntington Road)
  • Huntington Road (Lincoln Drive to Salem Road)
  • Vernon Avenue (Wyoming Road to Huntington Road)
  • Ludlow Road (Wyoming Road to Huntington Road)

"(The corner of Nadine and Meadowcrest) is a construction site," said Galed, who urged residents to avoid the area.
