Recycle at Beaumont's Recycl-a-thon, receive a Books for Babies kit at the Huntington Woods library or be inspired to create at the School Children's Art Exhibit at the DIA.

Books for Babies
Why go: Bring your newborns and toddlers to the library and ask for a Books for Babies kit. You will be invited to story times, get your child’s first library card, lots of reading tips and a board book for baby.

Why go: Here’s your chance to get rid of things and raise money for children with speech and language disorders. You can drop off your old computer, car batteries, cellphones and stereo equipment (a complete list is on the website) and know that 65 percent of the proceeds are going to Beaumont Children’s Hospital.
Where: Northwood Shopping Mall parking lot at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak

Cheddar’s Preschool Story Time
Why go: Join Cheddar the Mouse for a tale about May flowers. Make a simple craft and have a treat. It’s for children ages 2-5 and an adult.

Mom and Kids Apron
Why go: This is a great Mother’s Day present. In three sessions with your mom, learn how to read a pattern, how to sew on a sewing machine and come out with an apron.
Where: Haberman Fabrics, 905 S. Main St., Royal Oak
When: 10:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Saturdays through May 21

Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition
Why go: Your children will be inspired to create when you look at the winning painting, sculpture, pottery, drawing and mixed media made by K-12 students in Detroit Public Schools.
Where: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit
When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday through June 5
Cost: Free with museum admission: $8 adults, $4 children 6-17
What else: If you’re going on the weekend, be sure to create at the Drop-In Art Workshop from noon-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and check out the Family Fare at 2 p.m. Sundays.
