Get Out: Service Auction, Earth Hour, Comedy and More

This weekend in the Patch, the Huntington Woods Men's Club puts on its annual fundraiser, comic Heywood Banks plays a double header and House of Yoga turns off the lights to save the Earth.

This weekend in the Patch, you've got lots of options for getting out – from a community fundraiser to climate-controlling yoga.

30th ANNUAL HUNTINGTON WOODS MEN’S CLUB SERVICE AUCTION

Where/when: , 263255 Scotia Road; 6 p.m. Saturday

Why go: The Huntington Woods Men’s Club has been improving its community since 1975 and this marks the 30th year it has have put on an auction to bring people together for the cause (past auctions have raised a total of more than $1.25 million!). The event will include great food and drinks, plus live and silent auctions featuring unique experiences and items. In addition to helping fund Huntington Woods’ wonderful events, this year’s donations will help the city become the first in Oakland County to use single-stream recycling, meaning residents will no longer have to separate their plastic, metal, paper and glass items. Funds raised at the auction will be used to purchase a 64-gallon (trash can-size) recycling bin for every household in the community.

EARTH HOUR YOGA

Where/when: , 2965 W. 12 Mile Road; 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday

Why go: Earth Hour is a worldwide event that urges everyone to turn off their lights and other non-emergency electrical equipment for one hour to take a stand against climate change. (This year’s Earth Hour is from 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday.) Hundreds of millions of people joined in last year, and right here in Berkley, you can participate while getting a workout. This event features a candlelight yoga practice accompanied by live music, followed by an afterglow with tea and treats from and in Berkley and Cacao Tree Café in Royal Oak. (Space is limited, so register early by calling 248-556-0992.)

Pricing: $15, with all proceeds benefiting the Greening of Detroit

COMEDY LEGEND HEYWOOD BANKS WITH SPECIAL GUEST HARRY ARTIN

Where/when: , W. 12 Mile Road; 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Why go: Heywood Banks (née Stuart Mitchell) is a nationally known comic whose website describes him as “equal parts genius and buffoon.” He’s silly, weird-looking and sings hilarious songs in every style. Opening act Artin incorporates disguises and rapping into his act.

DELTA TWINS WITH DAVID NEFESH AND JOHN FINAN

Where/when: , 3087 W. 12 Mile Road; 8 p.m. Saturday

Why go: A mellow night upstairs at the Front, perfect for sipping on cold beer and tapping your feet. Farmington-based Delta Twins play bluesy Americana, while Nefesh and Finan are both a spin on folky rock.

Pricing: $5

THE JANE AUSTEN TEA

Where/when: , 26415 Scotia Road; 2 p.m. Thursday

Why go: Barbara Gulley, a self-described “tea etiquette consultant,” will sit and sip with you as she holds forth on the historical significance of tea during Austen’s time. Topics covered will include how Miss Austen took her tea, where she would have bought her teas, how she would have prepared it and more. Registration required.

HAPPY ENDINGS MONTHLY DANCE PARTY

Where/when: , 3087 W. 12 Mile Road; 10 p.m. Friday

Why go: Because you love Brit pop and you love to dance. And if you need another reason, 42 beers on tap and dozens more in bottles ain’t a bad one. (Check out the Facebook event listing to see a rundown of all the bands DJs Mike Tee, Slofu and Udenjoe spin at this monthly hop.)
