Community Corner

Get Out: Meditation, March Madness and Art Galore

This weekend the Patch also offers a library book sale and an exhibit at Amici's.

Just as I do every weekend, I now present five fun activities you can partake of right here in your own community. If it would just warm up a bit, you could comfortably walk or ride your bike to all of these.

1. ART FAIR FEVER AT YELLOW DOOR ART MARKET

Where/when: , 3141 W. 12 Mile Road; Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Find out what's happening in Huntington Woods-Berkleywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Why go: The crafty folks of Yellow Door Art Market are excited for art fair season, with the Berkley Art Bash in June, the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair in July, and Arts Beats & Eats rounding out the summer on Labor Day weekend in Royal Oak. But, even though it’s still winter, there’s no harm in rounding up some artists and holding a mini-art fair inside. Yellow Door’s event will feature 15 percent off almost everything in the store, local snacks and beverages, a free hand-made gift with purchases greater than $30, plus book signings by author and   photographer Peter Wurdock (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) and author Margaret H. Mason (1-3 p.m.)

Pricing: Free to browse

2. SATSANG AT HOUSE OF YOGA

Where/when: , 2965 W. 12 Mile Road; Friday, 7:30-9 p.m.

Why go: “Satsang” is a chance to come together with other yoga lovers and experience uplifting relaxation through chanting and guided meditation. According to the House of Yoga website, this satsang will “focus on our root chakra, inviting grounding stability and nurturing our earth connection.” Dress comfortably for sitting.

3. ART AT AMICI’S: CECILIA GABEL

Where/when: , 3249 W. 12 Mile Road; all month long

Why go: Cecilia Gabel is a Wayne State University graduate with a master’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Besides teaching art to children, she loves to create art that resonates with the duality of Detroit’s ongoing city vs. suburbs struggle. According to her artist statement, Cecilia’s life is “forever imprinted with the unique cityscape of a once grand metropolis – outwardly providing dreams of technology and mobility, while inwardly struggling to survive strife and decay.” Selections of her work will be on display and available for purchase at Amici’s through the end of March.

Pricing: No cover

4. NCAA BASKETBALL

Where/when: , 3071 W. 12 Mile Road, all weekend long (ESPN.com has an easy-to-browse schedule here)

Why go: The NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I Tournament brackets will be announced Sunday, March 13, but the fight to get a spot is going on as you read this. With dozens of games tipping off this weekend, the biggest action is Saturday, with top 25 action starting at noon. The biggest game for local fans, however, is the Michigan vs. Michigan State match-up at 2 p.m. Experience it with the whole community while frequenting your local sports bar, 24 Seconds (whose name is taken from the length of the NBA shot clock; though in these NCAA men’s games, the shot clock is actually 9 seconds longer).

Pricing: Free to browse

5. MONTHLY BOOK SALE

Where/when: , 26415 Scotia Road; Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Why go: Books are one of the best ways to relax, take a break from the stress of technology, and learn something at the same time (whether it’s history, literature, science, or just the plain fact that books still exist!). The Friends of the Library sponsor this book sale on the first Saturday of every month, so while you’re getting great deals on good reads, you’re also helping improve your library.
