Get Out: March Madness, St. Paddy's Day and More

This weekend, you also can savor ice cream at Clark's, find deals at the Mom2Mom sale in Berkley or check out bands.

This week, I’ve upped the ante and offered extra activities to partake in this weekend in Berkley and Huntington Woods.

ICE CREAM AT CLARK’S

Where/when: , 3312 12 Mile Road; Friday and Saturday noon to 10 p.m., Sunday-Thursday, noon to 9:30 p.m.

Why go: It’s warming up – we may even hit 60 today! – and ice cream is pretty much the cure for anything that ails you. Clark’s has added new flavors (Thin Mint Cookie, Turtle Pecan and Pomeberry, a mixture of pomegranate, blueberry and chocolate chips), they’ve introduced a guilt-free half-scoop size, and even lowered some prices. Business is so good, they may even start staying open year-round. Read about Clark’s in Patch editor .

Why go: Proceeds benefit Berkley Building Blocks, the Berkley Schools’ award-winning infant, toddler and preschool programs.

Pricing: $1 admission

NATHAN SHOCK WITH THE POUNDERS

Where/when: , 3087 12 Mile Road; Saturday, 9 p.m.

Why go: The Pounders Facebook event posting pretty much says it all: “A recipe for a great night of original music: The Pounders (think a little bit Elvis Costello, a dash of The Killers, a cup of Tom Petty and a tablespoon of the Who) and Nathan Schock (a smattering of Steve Earle with a generous amount of Jude Cole, plus a hundred other secret ingredients). Plus, the Berkley Front has about a million beers to wash it all down.”

Pricing: $5 cover

O’MARA’S ST. PATRICK’S DAY BASH

Where/when: , W. 12 Mile Road; Thursday, noon to close

Why go: With a name like O’Mara’s, you know they’ll have a rollicking St. Paddy’s Day party. There’ll be traditional Irish fare, green everywhere and the following music schedule: Charlie Latimer at noon, J.D. Rockinfellers at 3 p.m., the Ron Coden Show at 5:30 p.m., and Blackthorn Band at 9 p.m. But, be warned, seating in the same room as the bands is sold out for the last two shows (in fact, the Blackthorn show has been sold out since last year!). But, you can still sit in the bar area and enjoy the music.

Pricing: No cover to sit in the band room until 5:30 p.m, then it's sold out. $5 cover all day to sit at the bar.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY AT THE HAT TRICK PUB

Where/when: , 3490 W. 12 Mile Road; Thursday, 5 p.m.

Why go: Sometimes it’s fun to see how good you still are at skill sports once you get a little tipsy (WARNING: Don’t try this with darts). So head to the Hat Trick Pub inside Hartfield Lanes on St. Patrick’s Day, down a few green beers, and then (attempt to) hit the lanes. Each green beer costs a dollar, pints of Guinness are $3.25, and there'll be homemade Irish stew, corned beef and cabbage, and live music from the Incredibles (though I’m guessing it’s not the animated family of superheroes).

Pricing: No cover, and bowling is just $2.50 per game

UFC & NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Where/when: , 3071 12 Mile Road; UFC 128 is Saturday at 10 p.m. and NCAA tournament games run from noon to midnight Thursday through Sunday

Why go: Where else are you going to see all 16 March Madness games on Thursday, all 16 on Friday, all eight on Saturday, all eight on Sunday, and UFC 128 on Saturday night?

Pricing: No cover

HUNTINGTON WOODS TEEN COUNCIL MEETING

Where/when: , 26325 Scotia; Thursday, 7 p.m.

Why go: The HWTC has won several awards, so if you’re a teen in Huntington Woods, check out the council. This particular meeting will be a St. Patrick’s Day celebration of sorts, so don't forget to wear green. The council will also taking nominations for the 2011-2012 Executive Board. BATS: INSECT PREDATORS

Be prepared to encounter a live screech owl, brown bat, sugar glider and frog. (Pre-registration required, call 248-543-9720.)
