The food trucks are coming! The food trucks are coming!

And, then, they're staying.

The Foodtruck Cafe is slated to open during the third week of June at the former Coffee Beanery location on Woodward Avenue in Berkley. The venue will embrace the growing popularity of food trucks with the following three options under one roof.

  • Sideshow Sandwich Emporium, which will feature sandwiches with Coney Island-themed names.
  • Nacho Ordinary Nachos, which will offer a variety of options to top the traditional chips-and-cheese dish.
  • Air-stream Coffee, which will be served out of the back half of an old Airstream trailer.

"We've taken the food trucks and brought them inside," owner Kerry Johnson said. "We'll offer fast, casual, gourmet food."

The environment will be family-friendly, with games for kids, and an outdoor vibe in the dining room, including picnic tables and strands of twinkly lights, he said.

"We're just looking for a fun atmosphere," Johnson said. "We want people to walk down there with their family and just hang out and have fun."

He said the menu is still a work in progress, but will include vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items and use locally sourced products whenever possible.

Food trucks' popularity has been increasing nationwide and throughout Metro Detroit.

However, the business of a running a mobile restaurant can be a tough one.

"Despite the inherent attractiveness of cute trucks and clever food options, the business stinks," Adam Davidson wrote in The New York Times. "There are numerous (and sometimes conflicting) regulations."

Johnson will be able to sidestep some of those challenges but still capture the mobile restaurants' charm by setting up the permanent, indoor location along Woodward Avenue.

"I really like Berkley," he said. "It's a great community – there are a lot of neighbors around there and we always wanted to have a business Woodward."
