Cities Make Christmas Tree Disposal Easy

Berkley, Huntington Woods will pick up the festive plants and transform them into wood chips for residents.

It is a magical holiday tradition. The family gathers around, trimming the tree and sipping hot cocoa while Christmas music streams in the background. The sparkling tree becomes the centerpiece of the house and all holiday celebrations.

But, the tree looses its magical appeal right after the New Year.

"They all love to help put up the tree, but no one wants to help take it down," Berkley mom Lynn Trout said of her four kids.

Luckily, the cities of Berkley and Huntington Woods help keep the trees' magic alive by mulching them into wood chips that can be picked up in the spring for yard and garden use. Both cities remind residents to remove all ornaments and tinsel from their trees before putting them out at the curb.

Mulching is a yearly service provided to residents, so there is no rush to get your tree to the curb.
