Huntington Woods residents can leave their trees out for pickup on Mondays, along with other materials for chipping, Public Works manager Claire Galed said.

"The chips go to (the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority) to be mixed in with other compostable materials. We do ask that residents remove all ornaments and tinsel," she said. "If they have a drop cloth, either cloth or plastic, it must be removed. There is no cutoff for trees to be chipped."

Galed added that residents of Huntington Woods and Berkley can drop Christmas lights they'd like to recycle in their carts or bins, respectively.

Berkley residents also can put their trees out for the city's weekly chipping pickup, Public Works director Derrick Schueller said.

"If your garbage day is Tuesday, brush pick-up/chipper service is the following Thursday," he said. "If your garbage day is Friday, brush pick-up/chipper service is that Friday."

Trash collection will be delayed by one day in both cities the week of Dec. 31 due to the New Year's Day holiday.

Oakland County also will accept Christmas trees at its self-serve Christmas tree recycling locations.

Christmas tree recycling is available at 11 Oakland County Parks from Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Jan. 13, 2013, seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All decorations must be removed.

Extended collection dates are available at Independence Oaks in Clarkston and Orion Oaks in Orion Township, which will accept Christmas trees until Jan. 27, 2013.

The trees will be processed to make compost and wood chips that will be available to the public free of charge at Orion Oaks County Park in 2013.

Additionally, if you visit DestinationOakland.com and select "Christmas Tree Recycling," you will receive a free white pine tree seedling in the spring from the Oakland Conservation District.
