It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • On Monday, we reported that in Berkley has and boy, were you happy to hear it! The story garnered six "likes" on the Berkley Patch page on Facebook, along with comments about favorite flavors, which included Superman, Milky Way and Peanut Butter and Chocolate. The shop has added three new flavors this year: Thin Mint Cookie, Turtle Pecan  and Pomeberry (a mixture of pomegranate, blueberry and chocolate chips).
  • On Tuesday, we reported that the is and how to finance them. Chief among them is the telephone system, which has a typical life span of five to seven years, Superintendent Michael Simeck said. "Ours is close to 15 years (old). We have exhausted even replacement parts," he said. Besides the telephone system, Simeck said, the district is looking at how to systemically address classroom technology needs. He said equipment purchases cannot be financed through the sinking fund, so the district's options are to tap the general fund – which would affect classroom funding – or to issue a bond.

  • On Friday, we reported that the City Council recently approved a Officers' Association contract that will save the city an estimated $468,000 during the next three fiscal years. The contract, in combination with three other labor agreements the city recently approved, will save Berkley an estimated $1,595,000 during the 2010-2011 through 2012-213 fiscal years, Finance Director David Sabuda said.
  • Stay tuned this weekend for a story from the Mom2Mom sale Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at . Proceeds from the sale of gently used children's clothes and toys will benefit Berkley Building Blocks, the school district’s award-winning infant, toddler and preschool programs. Admission costs $1.
