It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • The during its meeting at . A home demolition, library fees, medical marijuana and more were among the issues discussed. The council also ratified a three-year tentative labor agreement with the Berkley Public Safety Officers' Association. Come back to Berkley Patch next week for more details on the contract.
  • On Tuesday . Some have changed their routines, but others seem resigned to the higher cost of getting where they need to go. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline Tuesday in Metro Detroit is $3.52, compared to $2.70 a year ago, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, a jump of nearly $1 per gallon.
  • . Renaissance made a late run to beat  62-52 in a Class A boys basketball district semifinal game Wednesday at Southfield High School. The Bears end their season with a 13-9 record overall.
  • On Thursday, we reported that this week's this spring and summer. The city is working on a multi-year project to upgrade roads and infrastructure throughout the community, which means several streets will become construction sites once the weather warms up. To prepare, crews worked this week to trim trees on the affected roads.
  • On Friday, we wrote about the fifth annual Berkley Home Improvement Expo, which will be held today at the gym. Dozens of contractors and home improvement experts will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. to offer ideas and information about permits, financing and more.   • Today we launched a new Saturday column "." This week, we look at where to find gluten-free foods. For example, Sugar Kisses in Berkley has gluten-free and vegan offerings and uses natural ingredients, while the 7-Eleven on Coolidge Highway in Oak Park offers kosher Slurpees. Each week, we'll also offer a recipe so families can cook up tasty, healthy meals at home!
