Catch Up On The News You Missed

Check out lighthearted fare and breaking news from Berkley and Huntington Woods.

It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • senior Terrell Porter to play at Iowa Central Community College in the fall. Porter scored 32 touchdowns and rushed for more than 1,500 yards while leading Berkley to a second-round playoff appearance in 2010. He has said he plans to improve his academic status and eventually transfer to a Division I program.
  • On Tuesday, we reported that to freeze pay and cut benefits for its nonbargaining employees, a move that will save the city an estimated $702,000 by the end of 2012. Councilman Daniel Benton said it was not easy to ask for the concessions, but he called it "the responsible thing to do."
  • We launched a new feature Wednesday called Whiz Kid. Each week, we'll spotlight an outstanding young person, or a group of young people, in Berkley or Huntington Woods. Our first Whiz Kid article offered on how parents can encourage their children to become volunteers.
  • On Thursday, we offered five for places to go in the Ferndale, Berkley, Royal Oak and Clawson areas to celebrate Valentine's Day. Next week's picks will be nonprofit groups that are making a difference in the community, and we'd like to hear from you! to suggest a nonprofit organization in Berkley or Huntington Woods that you think deserves recognition for its efforts.
  • Our Friday review described in Berkley as "the place to go – not only in Berkley, but also in the general area – for budget-friendly, fast Mexican fare." Critic Dorothy Hernandez said: "Four people can eat heartily from appetizers to dessert. Margarita's also boasts a lengthy Tex-Mex menu. Nothing fancy here; just comforting, homey Mexican food. Substance rules over presentation."
