It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • at the counter Monday at in Berkley. While there was a shared happiness over the 9/11 mastermind's death, concern over what comes next, as well as politics, were part of the discourse.
  • On Tuesday, we reported that in the , along with other possible cutbacks, during its study session Monday night at the Avery Center.
  • On Wednesday, we reported that Tuesday night by, well, not addressing it all. After many months, nine meetings and lots of head scratching, the Planning Commission decided that rather than enact an ordinance in response to the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act of 2008, it would be more sensible to treat primary caregivers as any other business. As such, primary caregivers will be covered under a portion of the city code that the commissioners amended during their meeting Tuesday at .
  • In what Berkley schools Superintendent Michael Simeck called "a betrayal of voters' intent," that would trim aid to Michigan public schools by 3.5 percent per student. The House bill passed 57-53, with six Republicans voting against. Simeck has warned that budget cuts will mean the elimination of programs, fewer teachers and larger class sizes.
  • On Friday, we reported that the annual Berkley Days celebration will kick off Thursday with a new event: the Taste of Berkley food and wine festival. Taste of Berkley, from 6-9 p.m. at the , will feature offerings from Hogger's BBQ, , , , , , , , , , , , and more. in Berkley will serve adult beverages.
