It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • The approved several spring fundraisers and discussed a proposed ordinance that would establish a permanent environmental committee during its meeting Monday night at . The council also heard a presentation from Mike Gentile of Matching Opportunities and Resources for Entrepreneurs (MORE), a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that aims to connect entrepreneurs with the resources they need to get their ideas off the ground. The city agreed to sign on with the partnership, which will require Berkley to provide a link for users on the city's website and help MORE catalog business opportunities within the city.
  • Census numbers released Tuesday reveal that from 15,531 in 2000 to 14,970 in 2010, a decrease of 551 people, or approximately 3.6 percent of the city's population. However, from 6,151 in 2000 to 6,238 in 2010, an increase of 87 people, or approximately 1.4 percent of the city's population.   • The family of Terrence Dyer, 42, of Detroit was notified that he was the person killed Sunday night in a fiery three-car accident near 12 Mile and Greenfield roads, Deputy Director Robert North said Wednesday. The names of the two others involved in the accident were not released due to an ongoing criminal investigation and medical privacy rules, North said.
  • Also Wednesday, we reported on the Tuesday night at . Recyclers of the Month for November through February received special red bins, and the Public Art, Beautification and Tree Advisory Board, which formed in January, added four members. The commission also approved a request from the Michigan Institute of Urology to hold the third annual 5K Prostate Cancer Race in the city on June 19. Huntington Woods residents Denise and Peter Rogers took advantage of the public participation portion of the meeting to urge city commissioners to re-form the Pesticide Task Force.

  • On Friday, we offered ahead of the 30th annual Huntington Woods Men's Club Service Auction, which will be held Saturday night at the . The adults-only auction is all for a good cause: Funds raised will be used for community projects, such as the purchase of single-stream recycling bins that let residents skip the sorting when they put their recyclables on the curb. Tickets for the auction are available at the Recreation Center for $10 in advance or $20 at the door. The event begins at 6 p.m.
