Andy the Reading Dog Returns to Library for Weekly Fall Visits

Andy will be a regular at the Huntington Woods Public Library from 3:30-5 p.m. every Thursday.

Andy, the yellow Labrador reading dog, is back just in time for the new school year to lend a paw and an ear to children at the .

No matter if they choose to read to him, pet his head or simply just wish to be slobbered with kisses, this 3-year-old therapy dog will be right by the little ones' sides.

Andy and his owner, Jane Alkon of Royal Oak, will visit the library from 3:30-5 p.m. every Thursday for some quality time with the tots, who can take their turns visiting with the canine.

“Andy impacts people’s lives everywhere, and the kids really look forward to it,” said Alkon. “Andy’s presence helps them build their self-esteem and their reading skills in a nonjudgmental way.”

Burton Elementary second-grader Madison Batchelor got her fair share of quality time with Andy on his first day back Sept. 15, spending nearly 30 minutes together reading books including Crocodile and Hen and Rescuing Endangered Species.

“I never knew dogs could come in the library, especially this big man, but he’s so cute and I just want to hold his cheeks,” Madison said.

While stroking Andy’s ears, Madison, who has a dog of her own at home, worked to pronounce large words in the books she had chosen and laughed each time the pooch licked her.

“He’s just a natural; he’s very relaxed, and he does a great job,” said Alkon. “The kids just love him.”

Judging from his past adventures at the library during the past year and a half, Andy will have plenty of companionship heading his way this season, especially in the form of one already-familiar face.

“I can’t wait to come back every Thursday to see this cutie pie,” Madison said.

No registration is necessary. For more information about Andy or other programs, call the library at 248-543-9720.
