Berkley CruiseFest Fires Up Fans

The classic car parade rolled though Berkley on Friday night.

It was a picture perfect evening Friday as hundreds of classic cars rolled through town during Berkley CruiseFest.

The classic car parade delighted fans that packed the sidewalks along 12 Mile Road on the eve of the Woodward Dream Cruise.

"I've always watched from the sidelines," said Doug Kerby of Madison Heights, who drove his 1981 El Camino in his first Berkley CruiseFest on Friday. "It's just amazing how many people there are."

Kerby, who raised seven children in Berkley and lived there for 40 years, said he was an original cruiser.

"I spent many years out there drag racing," he said, gesturing toward Woodward Avenue. "I lived in Clawson and I had a '32 Ford Roadster. We'd come out there and drag on the weekends – that was '51, '52."

CruiseFest was preceded by sidewalk sales throughout the day and followed by food, games and live music downtown. The event sets the stage for the Woodward Dream Cruise, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, and lasts until 9 p.m.
