“The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.” ~ Woodrow Wilson

Mental Attitude: Link Found Between Heart Disease and Dementia in Postmenopausal Women. A German study that included 6,500 elderly women found that those with heart disease were nearly 30% more likely to suffer from cognitive decline. Of the women with heart disease, those who had a heart attack were twice as likely to experience cognitive decline as those who had not had a heart attack. According to lead author Dr. Bernhard Haring, "Women with heart disease -- in particular women who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease or carotid endarterectomy -- should be monitored by their doctors for potential cognitive decline… It is also very important to adequately manage heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes." Journal of the American Heart Association, December 2013

Health Alert: Stroke Deaths Decreasing Due to Improved Prevention and Treatment. According to a new report, stroke deaths in the United States have declined due to improved treatment and prevention. Smoking cessation programs, improved control of cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and improved and faster stroke treatment are believed to have contributed to these results. Report author Dr. Daniel T. Lackland writes, "The decline in stroke deaths is one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th and 21st centuries. The decline is real, not a statistical fluke or the result of more people dying of lung disease, the third leading cause of death." Stroke, December 2013

Diet: Eating Fiber Lowers Heart Risk! After analyzing 22 previous studies, researchers conclude that a diet high in fiber lowers a person's risk for cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease with significant risk reduction increases for every 7 grams of fiber consumer per day. Dr. Robert Baron, professor of Medicine at the University of California, adds, "[Eating more fiber] may turn out to be the most important nutrition recommendation of them all." British Medical Journal, December 2013

Exercise: Does Altitude Matter? A study involving collegiate distance runners found that living about 2,500 meters (~1.5 miles) above sea level during altitude training resulted in the greatest improvements in performance when they returned to compete at sea level. Journal of Applied Physiology, December 2013

Chiropractic: Good for Neck and Arm Pain. A 60-year-old woman with a herniated disk in her neck causing severe neck and left arm pain began a trial of chiropractic care. By the third week of treatment, her neck pain had resolved and at six weeks her arm pain was 60% improved. Within five months the patient’s pain, numbness, and grip strength returned to normal. The author of this case-study concluded that conservative treatment including chiropractic manipulative therapy seems to be a reasonable alternative to surgery for neck and arm pain caused by a herniated cervical disk.  Journal of Manipulative Physiology Therapeutics, February 1994

Wellness/Prevention: Sing Your Way to Happiness by Joining a Choir. A new online survey of 400 people who either sing in a choir, sing alone, or play on a sports team found that mental well-being is higher among those who sing in a choir. Furthermore, choir members in the survey regarded their choir as a more meaningful social group than how athletes viewed their sports team. Study author Dr. Nick Stewart adds, "These findings suggest that the experience of using your voice to make music may be enhanced when you feel part of a cohesive social group." British Psychological Society, December 2013
