Mental Attitude: Death of a Loved One During Childhood Affects Mental Health Later in Life. A large systematic review of nearly one million medical records has found that there is a small but significant increase in psychosis risk among adults who suffered the loss of a close family member during childhood. The risk is increased if the cause of death was suicide.  British Medical Journal, January 2014

Health Alert: Heart Attack Mortality Greater at Night and Weekends. A new study reveals that people visiting the hospital at night or on the weekend for a heart attack have a 5% greater risk of death at the hospital or within 30 days of discharge compared with heart attack patients who visit the hospital during regular hours. While the reason is not clear, the authors of the study determined this difference resulted in an extra 6,000 deaths in the United States last year.   British Medical Journal, January 2014

Diet: A Diet that Includes Yogurt May Reduce Type 2 Diabetes Risk! An eleven-year study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge shows that incorporating yogurt into a diet may help prevent against type 2 diabetes. Of the individuals studied, those who consumed yogurt in their diet had a 28% reduced risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes.  Diabetologia, February 2014

Exercise: Small Elliptical Exercise Device Promotes Activity While Sitting. If you sit a lot at work, there may be an easy way to burn some calories to help you maintain your weight. Thirty-two participants used a compact elliptical device to increase physical activity while sitting. Researchers found that 86% of the participants were able to expend enough energy in just one hour a day to stop weight gain. The author of the study believes that daily use of a device like this for one hour could result in a weight loss of 5.2 pounds (~2.4 kg) per year and help prevent the annual one- to two-pound (.45-.9 kg) weight gain common among adults in the United States.   Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, September 2013

Chiropractic: The Hormonal Effect of Spinal Manipulation. Pre- and post-adjustment blood samples show that spinal manipulation temporarily increases serum levels of neurotensin and oxytocin, hormones with healing and analgesic properties.   Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, January 2014

Wellness/Prevention: Your Body Will Age Better if You Enjoy Life. A new study claims that individuals who enjoy life have better physical function and faster walking speeds than people who are more pessimistic. The study found that people who had a low sense of well-being were more than three times as likely to experience problems in performing daily activities. Study co-author Dr. Steptoe explains, "Our results provide further evidence that enjoyment of life is relevant to the future disability and mobility of older people. Efforts to enhance well-being at older ages may have benefits to society and health care systems." Canadian Medical Association Journal, January 2014
