Mental Attitude: Pesticide and Parkinson's Link. Researchers have discovered a genetic mutation that increases a person's risk for Parkinson’s disease when they are exposed to pesticides and herbicides. When this mutation is present, nerve cells that produce dopamine have no protection from pesticide damage. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that carries out a number of functions in the body, including helping to control motor function. Investigators plan to perform further research about how genes and environmental factors interact to contribute to Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases.  Cell, November 2013

Health Alert: New Test Detects Brain Cancer in 30 Minutes. Researchers have created a new technique that can speed up current methods of diagnosing brain cancer from two to three days to 30 minutes. The new technique uses infrared light on blood serum to detect whether gliomas (a type of tumor that starts in the brain or spine) are present.  Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, September 2013

Diet: Breast Caner Linked to High-Fat Diets in Puberty. New research suggests a diet high in saturated fat during puberty may increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer later in life. Researchers caution that evidence from this study suggests the effects of a high-fat diet in early puberty could be permanent, even if a lower fat diet is followed in adulthood.  Breast Cancer Research, October 2013

Exercise: Is it Too Late to Start Exercising for Better Health? Never! A recent report finds that even individuals who don’t start exercising until retirement age can enjoy significantly better health compared to those who remain inactive. Doireann Maddock, Senior Cardiac Nurse with the British Health Foundation adds, "It's well worth getting into the habit of keeping active, as we know it can help reduce the risk of heart disease along with many other conditions."  British Journal of Sports Medicine, November 2013

Chiropractic: Chronic Neck Pain. A review of 1980 citations and 19 publications revealed quality evidence that individuals with chronic neck pain show clinical improvements from spinal manipulation or mobilization at 6, 12, and up to 104 weeks post-treatment. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, March 2007

Wellness/Prevention: Plant Nutrient Cocktail Kills Breast Cancer Cells. Researchers have found that a super cocktail made up of six natural compounds found in fruits, vegetables, spices, and plant roots kills sample breast cancer cells without negatively affecting healthy, normal cells. The six compounds included in the cocktail are Curcumin (also known as tumeric), Isoflavone from soybeans, Indo-3-Carbinol from cruciferous plants, C-phycocyanin from spirulina, Reservatrol from grapes, and Quercetin, a flavonoid present in fruits, vegetables, and tea. Breast cancer is currently the second most common breast cancer with over 230,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed in the next year. The Journal of Cancer, November 2013
