Mental Attitude: Frequently Changing Schools May Harm Mental Health of Kids. A new study suggests that children who change schools three or more times are at a 60% increased risk of developing psychotic symptoms as preteens. Furthermore, such symptoms at a young age are associated with a greater likelihood of mental health problems and suicide in adulthood. Study leader Dr. Swaran Singh writes, "Our study found that the process of moving schools may itself increase the risk of psychotic symptoms -- independent of other factors. But additionally, being involved in bullying, sometimes as a consequence of repeated school moves, may exacerbate risk for the individual." Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, February 2014

Health Alert: Selenium & Vitamin E Increase Prostate Cancer Risk? Does a daily high-dose supplement of vitamin E (400 IU/day) and selenium (200 mcg/day) offer men protection from prostate cancer? A twelve-year study was cut short when the supplements appeared to offer no benefit and may even have substantially increased the participants' risk of prostate cancer. Researcher Dr. Alan Kristal explains, “Men using these supplements should stop, period. Neither selenium nor vitamin E supplementation confers any known benefits – only risks… While there appear to be no risks from taking a standard multivitamin, the effects of high-dose single supplements are unpredictable, complex, and often harmful. Taking a broad view of the recent scientific studies there is an emerging consistency about how we think about optimal intake of micronutrients. There are optimal levels, and these are often the levels obtained from a healthful diet, but either below or above the levels there are risks.” Journal of National Cancer Institute, February 2014

Diet: Vitamin A May Help in Fight Against Tuberculosis. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles believe that increasing the active form of vitamin A (known as all-trans reinoic acid) in cells helps them combat tubercle bacillus (TB), more commonly known as tuberculosis. Their work shows that TB feeds on cholesterol found in parts of cells called lysosomes. When exposed to greater amounts of active vitamin A, cholesterol levels in these organelles decrease. Not only does this cut TB off from a nutritional source but it also appears to stimulate the cell to defend itself from infection. Experts classify tuberculosis as a major global health problem that's responsible for an estimated two million deaths each year. Immunology, March 2014

Exercise: Walking May Help Older Men Decrease Hip Fractures. A large study lasting 24 years suggests the more men walk and the more vigorously they walk, the lower their risk for suffering a hip fracture. Researchers found that men who walked at least four hour a week saw a drop in hip fractures by 43% compared to those who walked less than an hour a week. American Journal of Public Health, February 2014

Chiropractic: Combine with Acupuncture for Headache Relief. A 32-year-old woman with headaches for a five-month duration and episodic migraines since her teens presented for chiropractic care combined with acupuncture care. After five treatments, her headaches resolved and she was still headache free at her one-year follow-up. Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, September 2012

Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Saturated Fat. Swedish researchers found that consuming greater amounts of saturated fat increases the amount of fat tissue present around the abdomen and internal organs, a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.  Diabetes, February 2014
