“If you go looking for a friend, you're going to find they're very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you'll find them everywhere.” ~ Zig Ziglar

Mental Attitude: High Internet Use Indicates Addictive Behavior. Young adults who engage in heavy Internet use may display signs of addictive behavior similar to those found in drug addicts. Dr. P. Murali Doraiswamy, a Professor at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, writes, "About 5-10% of all Internet users appear to show web dependency, and brain imaging studies show that compulsive Internet use may induce changes in some brain reward pathways that are similar to that seen in drug addiction. We tend to take drug-related addictions more seriously than if someone were using the Internet as a drug. The negative consequences of the Internet may be quite under-appreciated." University of Science and Technology, December 2013

Health Alert: Higher Autism Risk Tied to Hospital Infection During Pregnancy. A recent analysis shows that pregnant women with bacterial infections diagnosed in the hospital had a 58% higher risk of delivering a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The researchers behind the analysis suspect that the immune response of the mother's body may inadvertently affect her fetus' brain development.   Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, December 2013

Diet: Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Previous research has established heart disease as a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. A new study involving older men and women at high-risk for heart disease separated participants into groups that adhered to either a Mediterranean-style diet or a low-fat diet. After four years, a smaller percentage of participants on the Mediterranean-style diet developed type 2 diabetes than participants in the low-fat diet group. Annals of Internal Medicine, January 2014

Exercise: Safe Stretching Guidelines. Don't stretch if muscles aren't warmed up. Carefully stretch until there's light tension in the muscles, taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling. Hold that position for 15-to-30 seconds, relax, and repeat up to four times. Stay still and don't bounce during stretching. Don't push yourself to the point of pain; ease the stretch until it is comfortable. Breathe normally as you stretch. Don't hold your breath. American Council on Exercise, December 2013

Chiropractic: Headache Relief. Spinal adjustments resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches that originate in the neck. As a treatment for tension-type headaches, spinal adjustments resulted in significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief than prescribed medication. Duke University, January 2001

Wellness/Prevention: Look Younger for Longer! While some exposure to sunlight is important for vitamin D production, too much exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation can ultimately degrade the collagen that keeps the skin looking young and healthy. British researchers have discovered a new anti-oxidant called Tiron that appears to offer 100% protection against UVA sun damage. Further research is necessary to determine if Tiron is safe or toxic to humans. If safe, possible vehicles for Tiron administration include sunscreen, cosmetics, food additives, or dietary supplements. The FASEB Journal, January 2014
