Mental Attitude: Battling Postpartum Depression. Research shows that 13% of new mothers suffer from postpartum depression. Lowering that number may be as easy as increasing the standard amount of time women are allowed for maternity leave. According to a study by Dr. Rada K. Dagher from the University of Maryland School of Public Health, women who had six months of maternity leave were less likely to experience postpartum depression when compared with women who returned to work within 6-12 weeks of the birth of their child. Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, December 2013

Health Alert: Does Anti-Bacterial Soap Work? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that there is no evidence anti-bacterial soaps are any more effective at preventing illness than plain soap and water. Many anti-bacterial soaps contain potentially harmful chemicals, like triclosan and triclocarban, that may have unanticipated hormonal impacts on long-term users. Because of this potential risk, the FDA has issued a proposed rule that would require anti-bacterial soap manufacturers to provide more substantial data to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of their products.  Food and Drug Administration, December 2013

Diet: Sodas and Sweet Drink Consumption Linked To Endometrial Cancer. In a study involving data on over 23,000 post menopausal women, researchers found that the women who consumed the most soda and other sugary drinks had a 78% increased risk of endometrial cancer. Interestingly, sugar-free soft drinks, sweets/baked goods, and starch consumption was not linked to an increased risk of the same cancer. Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, November 2013

Exercise: Exercise May Not Help Prevent Holiday Weight Gain. Last year, researchers followed men and women for six weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Half reported they exercised regularly while the others considered themselves couch potatoes. On average, participants gained about one and a half pounds (~.7 kg). Strangely, exercise appeared to have no significant impact on reducing holiday weight gain. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, September 2013

Chiropractic: Acute and Chronic Neck Pain Improves. A review of 41 randomized controlled studies suggests that chiropractic care improves outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain.  Journal Of Manipulative Physiologic Therapeutics, November 2013

Wellness/Prevention: Risk of Clots Increase with Lengthy Car Rides or Plane Flights. About two million Americans develop deep vein thrombosis (clots in legs) every year, and nearly 200,000 die. Sitting for long periods of time in cramped spaces such as cars or airplanes can decrease circulation in the legs, resulting in blood clot formation. Clots can travel through the blood stream and lodge in the lungs, brain, heart, and other areas leading to severe damage to organs and possibly death. According to Dr. Alan Lumsden, chief of cardiovascular surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital's heart and vascular center, "It's a very serious condition that can simply be avoided by getting up and moving around."  Houston Methodist Hospital, November 2013
