Mental Attitude: Reduce Anxiety by Increasing Brain Acidity. According to a new animal study, increased acidity in the amygdala, the brain’s emotional control center, reduces anxiety symptoms. The study focused on acid-sensing ion channels called ASIC1a, which respond to pH changes in the environment outside of the cell. The findings suggest a new mechanism to control fear and anxiety, which could be a new target for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Journal of Neuroscience, February 2014

Health Alert: Maternal Use of Acetaminophen Increases Risk of Offspring Behavioral Disorders. A Danish study suggests that children of mothers who used acetaminophen during their pregnancy are at greater risk of developing behavioral problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study involved about 64,000 children and their mothers and revealed that about 50% of mothers used acetaminophen during their pregnancy. Children of those mothers were more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD-like behaviors at age seven and more likely to use medications for the disorder. The authors of the study note that further research is needed to determine the association. JAMA Pediatrics, February 2014

Diet: Grilled Meat Consumption May Increase Risk of Alzheimer's & Diabetes. New research suggests that consuming some grilled or broiled meats may increase a person's risk of Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Researchers claim that heat-processed meats contain high levels of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), which are associated with several degenerative diseases. A study performed on mice demonstrated that mice that consumed high levels of AGEs developed problems with cognitive and motor abilities as well showed signs of insulin resistance. The findings reveal the importance of not just what we eat, but also how we prepare what we eat. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, January 2014

Exercise: Does the Order of Cardio and Resistance Training Matter? Fitness experts and researchers alike have long wondered whether the order of a workout routine matters when it comes to attaining maximum results. New information from an all-male participant study indicates that after six months, both groups (resistance first vs. cardio first) achieved statistically similar outcomes in physical performance and muscle development. European Journal of Applied Physiology, April 2014

Chiropractic: Another Baby Benefits from Care. This case-study involves a six-month-old boy who had a four month history of suckling problems. After chiropractic evaluation, dysfunctions in the cranium and upper cervical spine were noted. The child received chiropractic treatment five times and the suckling intolerance resolved after the first treatment. The author of this report notes that further research in this area could be beneficial. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, November 2000

Wellness/Prevention: Drinking Age of 21 Saves Lives. A recent review of data reveals that since the drinking age was set at 21 years across the United States (US) in the 1980s, American youths are less likely to be involved in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents. Each year, approximately 5,000 youths under the age of 21 in the US die from alcohol-related issues such as unintentional injuries, homicides, and suicides. The review suggests that these numbers would be higher if not for the current drinking age. Investigators found that binge drinking among high school seniors decreased from 35% in 1988 to 22% in 2011. Author Dr. William DeJong adds, "Some people assume that students are so hell-bent on drinking, nothing can stop them. But it really is the case that enforcement works." Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, February 2014
