OAKLAND COUNTY TO GET NEW RESOURCE & CRISIS CENTER: Common Ground to Relocate Crisis Related Services

(OAKLAND COUNTY, MI) Sept. 13, 2013 -- When Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority (OCCMHA) completes renovations to the former Golden Oaks Nursing Home on the Oakland County Campus, Common Ground’s crisis related services, funded by OCCMHA, will be relocated to the building under one roof. These services include the 24-hour Crisis and Resource Helpline, Emergency Psychiatric Services, ACCESS services (currently located at Doctors Hospital in Pontiac) and the Crisis Residential Unit (currently located at Hendrie in Royal Oak).   

Restoration of the building will address a community need for increased public resources for individuals who have a mental illness, developmental disability, serious emotional disturbance, or substance use disorder, and are in need of immediate support. The facility is conveniently situated near a community bus line route and is adjacent to the Health Department and WIC services.

Services offered at the 24,219 square foot Resource & Crisis Center, located at 1200 N Telegraph Rd., Bldg. 32E in Pontiac, will include:

·         OACIS (Oakland Assessment and Crisis Intervention Services) – Recovery oriented face to face Crisis intervention and stabilization services for all Oakland County Residents. Focuses on problem solving and assertive crisis resolution strategies tailored to each person’s specific needs (13 available rooms: 11 adult and 2 youth)

·         OCIRT (Oakland Crisis Intervention and Recovery Team)- provides recovery oriented mobile crisis intervention to people where they are, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The team serves those experiencing a mental health crisis, helping to de-escalate the crisis situation and link the individual or family to services that will meet their needs.

·         Legal Aid- Free legal services to Oakland County residents in need from volunteer licensed attorneys.

·         Victim Assistance Program-24-hour access to counselors and advocates for victims of crime, domestic and sexual abuse and workplace violence.  Assistance includes on-site advocacy, death notification, personal protection order assistance and accompaniment of victims to hospitals

·         24-Hour Crisis and Resource Helpline – Part of the National Suicide Hotline. Telephone access to confidential counseling, crisis intervention, debriefing, information and referrals.

·         Teen 2 Teen Talk Chat Line – allows teens an opportunity to talk anonymously and confidentially to a peer about personal challenges

·         ACCESS – Primarily telephone services that assist adults’ and children’s entry into the specialty mental health and developmental disability service system and/or community resources 

·         Crisis Residential Unit – short-term (1-14 days/ capacity to serve 16) residential housing where individuals in crisis stay under the supervision of a clinical team including, case managers, nurses, peers and a psychiatrist for the purpose of mental health stabilization and introduction to recovery supports as well as starting medication, getting assistance with securing community supports and avoiding hospitalization.

The building will also be occupied by PACE (Prior Authorization and Central Evaluations for the Office of Substance Abuse Services), a pharmacy, and X-Ray Lab Services. The projected completion date of the construction work is December, 2013.
