Small Business Saturday Gives 'Shop Local' Movement a Holiday Boost

Berkley and Huntington Woods businesses to participate in Nov. 24 promotion that features $25 incentive from American Express.

This seasonal greeting comes from hometown merchants: Don't be in thrall to the mall.

They're spreading the word via social media and window signs with help from American Express, organizer of the second annual Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24. The credit card issuer promotes a nationwide "day for everyone – from the business owners who create jobs to the customers who buy locally – to support small businesses that invigorate the economy and keep communities thriving," it explains online.

A query on the Berkley Patch Facebook page Monday about who will participate drew a robust response, including the following comments.

  • Carrie Miknyocki Vestrand: City Style, of course, will be participating in the entire weekend shopping frenzy with lots of great deals and FUN ... details soon to be released:-)
  • Jeff Allyn: Berkley Chiropractic Clinic will be open on Saturday. Make sure you back is in shape to carry all those holiday gifts!
  • Lisa Platt (Auensen): This will be my 6th year of doing all local holiday shopping and local shopping throughout the year. I rarely wait in line, and I feel good about every gift I give. Already registered my Amex card for Saturday!
  • Colette MacDonald Nutton: I will DEF be shopping local on Saturday, including mine and my daughters fav, City Style Inc. I have tried for the last few years to go exclusively local – it's not as easy as it sounds, but Im PRETTY CLOSE.

"It began in 2010 when American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year," the movement's website says. "Last year, over 100 million people came out to shop at independently-owned small businesses on the day."

The credit firm puts money where its promotion is by offering a one-time $25 rebate to shoppers spending at least $25 at a small business after registering their credit card here. Any nonfranchised, locally owned shop qualifies if it accepts American Express.
