McCourt's Music Floods; Classes Canceled

The Berkley shop remains open for business as the owner and city officials seek to determine the problem's cause.

Employees of in downtown Berkley opened the shop's doors to more than 2 inches of flood water Saturday morning.

Owner Dan McCourt said the shop has not had any flooding problems during the 5 years he’s owned the location, but that changed after storms passed through the area overnight. .

“We’ve had big rains before but never had a problem,” he said. “The city will be coming back with a dye to pour in the drain to see which way it runs in order to figure out if it’s a city problem or a store problem.”

McCourt's had to cancel between 20 and 30 music lessons Saturday, he said. Employees moved equipment and anything that was on the floor outside.

“One gentleman came up and bought a keyboard bench,” McCourt said. “So we’re still open for business. We’re just doing it ‘old school’ with hand-written receipts and taking down credit card numbers.”

The flooding happened sometime after 9 p.m. Friday, when McCourt closed up and 8:30 a.m. Saturday when employees opened the shop.

McCourt said he anticipates the problem is a storm drain backup.

"It’s clear water and everything seemed to come up through the floor," he said. "There’s no smell.”

City workers were set to return to test the drains and cleaning crews were busy vacuuming the flood water.

Neither business on either side — to the west and to the east — was affected by the flood.
