Hogger's BBQ Won't Reopen After All – At Least For Now

A last-minute lease dispute put the brakes on plans to revive the popular Berkley eatery, co-owner says.

Diners who showed up Monday for the slated reopening of Hogger's BBQ in Berkley only to find the door locked will be further disappointed to learn plans to revive the popular restaurant have fizzled.

A last-minute lease dispute put the brakes on the reopening, Berkley businessman Andy Gilbert said Tuesday. He had stepped in earlier this month to help the beleaguered business after co-owner Jane Lancaster closed the restaurant, also citing lease issues.

"We have lost our lease after many months of disagreements with our landlord," Lancaster wrote in an e-mail to customers earlier this month. "We really wish we had been able to negotiate with him."

A glum Gilbert said Tuesday that he and Lancaster have not decided whether to try to reopen in another location. He declined further comment.

The building owner on file with the city of Berkley – Hoo Sai Kai, LLC, of El Cajon, CA – could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
