Get Out: Pop Art, Lucky Peterson, Toys and More

This weekend in the Patch, catch a blues legend live, check out some really cool art, take in a "Super" fun flick and save on brand name toys.

Want to have some fun this weekend? I highly recommend the first two events (No. 2 in particular, because you won't get this chance again.) Read on for all the details...

1. TIM GRALEWSKI AND CARL OXLEY III: "POP ART AND PRINTS"

Where/when: (inside the ), 26415 Scotia; reception Friday 6:30-8:30 p.m. Exhibit runs until March 24 during normal library hours.

Why go: Every month and a half or so, the Woods Gallery changes its exhibition and throws a public party to celebrate. The artwork is always really cool, but for my money (even though the reception doesn’t cost anything), the show opening this Friday really takes the bold, colorful cake. Tim Gralewski’s screen prints draw on anything from his own memories to pure, graphic composition. And Carl Oxley III, who readily admits he was inspired to paint by a video on artist Keith Haring, takes such obvious joy in bright colors and whimsical characters that it’s no surprises he says in his artist statement, “I love making people laugh and smile.” He also believes “art should be accessible to everyone” and makes his pieces extremely affordable for the amateur collector.

Pricing: Free

2. BLUES LEGEND LUCKY PETERSON LIVE

Where/when: , 2555 W. 12 Mile Rd.; Sunday at 9 p.m.

Why go: If you’re a blues fan, I don’t think you need any other reason to go to this other than the plain fact that it’s Lucky Peterson performing live, right in your own neighborhood! Fresh off a tour of Germany, Peterson is such a big star (according to a biography on AllMusic.com), he scored a national R&B hit with the song “1-2-3-4,” at the age of 6! Don’t miss this! (There aren’t enough exclamation points to really drill that point home.)

Pricing: $8

3. TIM SNASKI AT THE COFFEE BEANERY

Where/when: , 28557 Woodward Ave.; Friday from 7-10 p.m.

Why go: These Coffee Beanery performances are always a cure for stress. Snaski  plays guitar and piano, combine that with a hot chocolate, a baked treat and a comfy chair and you’ve got a recipe for “ahhhhhhh.”

Pricing: No cover charge

4. FEBRUARY FAVORITES SALE AT THE DOLL HOSPITAL & TOY SOLDIER SHOP

Where/when: , 3947 12 Mile Rd.; sale runs through the end of February.

Why go: Save 15 percet on thousands of brand name toys all month. Check out the website to see full promotion details.

Pricing: Free to browse

5. BREW & VIEW: 'SUPERBAD'

Where/when: , 2555 W. 12 Mile Rd.; Thursday at 9 p.m.

Why go: I’m sure you’ve all heard about the “Brew & View” nights at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, where you can throw back a few drinks while taking in a movie. But did you know that O’Mara’s, right here in Berkley, does the same thing every Thursday night? The difference is that the Bag’s shows cost three bucks and O’Mara’s is free! This week’s movie is Superbad, the hilarious comedy about two high school seniors (played by Michael Cera and Jonah Hill) trying to have the best night of their lives. Their plans are helped – and sometimes hurt – by their nerdy friend “McLovin” (the adorable Christopher Mintz-Plasse). My favorite part? The hapless police, played by (Jonah Hill’s long-lost cousin?) Seth Rogen, and my favorite SNL cast member, Bill Hader.

Pricing: No cover charge
