Bites Nearby: Mazza Indian Cuisine

Berkley restaurant lives up to its name with delicious, tasty offerings.

Mazza Indian Cuisine, 3354 W. 12 Mile Rd., Berkley, (248) 543-6299

Chef Abdul Noor and Razur Rahman, the building's owner, have completely restored what for many years was hidden behind an anonymous exterior, the very buttoned-up Passage to India.

It has been opened up, with big windows in front and a fresh look inside, featuring Venetian plastered walls in ivory and soft gold and colorful 16th century Mughal folk art hand painted on fabric for .

Chef Noor, who learned his trade in London, grinds and blends his spices and tailors them to each dish. Signature dishes include chicken tikka masala, chunks of chicken breast cooked in a creamy yogurt, raisin and almond sauce; and lamb pall, a stewlike dish with a spiciness that is just under the top level of vindaloo.

Vegetarian selections are notable. Some can be ordered as main dishes and others as accompaniments, including a refreshing saag bhaji (chopped fresh spinach cooked with onions and garlic), and gobi bhaji (subtly spicy cauliflower with tomatoes and green peppers).

Mazza (pronounced Mah-Zah) means delicious or tasty and it fulfills that promise.
