Berkley High School Creative Writing Class Receives Honor, Board Recognition

BHS Creative Writing class produced a 250 literary magazine, Not Nice, and wrote a 55,000 word novel in 30 days called "Fifty Shades of Green."

Creative Writing is an elective course offered to all students at Berkley High School (BHS). One of the course's greatest strengths is that it attracts students of all ages and abilities and then asks them to work together in a creative environment. The class has recently received awards for the two publications it produced, and was honored at this month’s Berkley School District Board of Education meeting.

At the end of the school year students collaborate and compile their very best work to publish in the BHS literary magazine, Not Nice. Last year’s issue (#2) features over 250 pages of student-produced writing that spans several genres and was recently named one of the top high school literary magazines in the state of Michigan, earning an award of “Excellent” for the second year in a row by the National Council of Teachers of English. Not Nice, will be available for sale in mid May at the BHS student store (The Bear).

In addition to creating a literary magazine, the current Creative Writing class recently participated in National Novel Writing Month, a challenge to writers around the world to create--from scratch--a 55,000 word novel in 30 days. BHS students produced Fifty Shades of Green, a collaboratively written novel under a single pen-name. Copies were professionally published.
